03 The limit
30 characters, and emojis can spend two
The Snapchat Display Name holds 30 characters including spaces. A styled letter costs the same as a plain one, so decoration is paid for out of the same budget rather than added on top.
Emojis are the exception worth knowing. An emoji sits outside the range that counts as a single unit, so one can spend two of your 30 characters. The counter above uses the stricter of the two ways the field can count, which is why a name it marks as fitting will not be refused for length.
04 The trap
The username changes once a year — the Display Name does not
Snapchat lets you change the Display Name at any time and the username once a year. That asymmetry is the reason a decorated name belongs in the Display Name: a regrettable Display Name costs nothing to undo, and a regrettable username costs twelve months.
One quirk follows from it. Snapchat continues to show some friends the name they saw when they first added you, so a change can reach new friends before it reaches older ones. If a friend still sees the old name, that is the cache rather than a failed save.

Will a stylish name affect who finds you?
Yes, a fully styled name can make you harder to find. Snapchat matches searches against the username and the Display Name, and 𝓐𝓲𝓼𝓱𝓪 is a different sequence of characters from Aisha, so someone typing your name normally may not match it.

Why a stylish name breaks on Snapchat
Boxes (☐) mean the reader's device has no glyph for that character. The text is still valid, and cursive, small caps, bubble and outline render on virtually every phone sold since 2015. Rarer sets break more often, and they break on your friend's phone rather than yours.
Two other failures have different causes. A name Snapchat refuses to save has usually hit the 30-character limit rather than a character problem.
